Kathryn Spinelli

Experience

Kathryn is the Principal at Kathryn Spinelli & Associates, a leadership and talent development consulting firm. A former Human Resources and Talent Management Executive in multiple industries, Kathryn has broad experience in formal corporate leadership positions. In addition, she has worked as both an internal and external consultant and coach for organizations ranging from large publically traded global organizations to mid-size privately held companies.

Kathryn led the entire Kmart Corporation Human Resources function upon their successful emergence from their first bankruptcy. In this role, she sponsored the redesign of all aspects of the organization’s HR support for over 186,000 employees, at what was then one of the largest employers in the U.S. Prior to this role, she was the Vice President of Corporate Training and Development for Kmart. She began her career in the High-Tech industry, originally in Marketing, but soon moving into Leadership Development, Organization Development, Change Management, and Strategic Human Resources roles for both Oracle Corporation and Electronic Data Systems, then a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation.

Kathryn transitioned from her executive role into consulting and became a Master Associate of Lominger, which was later acquired by Korn Ferry Leadership and Talent Consulting. Projects included designing and helping to implement a wide range of practical HR and talent solutions that were based on best practices in leadership/ executive development, organization development, succession planning, selection, and alignment of strategy to HR practices.

Kathryn’s consulting work spanned a wide variety of multi-national industries, including Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical, Mining, State Government, Travel, Insurance, Financial, Real Estate, and Healthcare. She worked with leadership teams to improve their effectiveness, and with leaders at all levels to provide feedback and guide development. Coaching for these leaders focused on creating new strategies and tactics to help them succeed in their current roles as well as prepare for next ones.

After almost a decade as an external consultant, Kathryn was recruited by a client, Herman Miller, a mid-size manufacturer. She became their Vice President of Talent Management and Total Rewards. In that role, she led executive, leadership and professional development; talent acquisition; compensation; benefits; payroll; and wellness functions.

With the return to her consulting role over two years ago, Kathryn is again working with large and mid-size organizations, as well as a smaller non-profit. Her focus is on helping organizations implement best practices and research-based tools that support the development of their leaders, executives, and HR teams.

An additional focus of her practice is on individual feedback and coaching, with a particular interest in helping leaders develop the resilience necessary to adjust, change and learn.  Kathryn is an Associate of TeamTelligent and Matrix Insights. She is also certified in many assessments and other key leadership development tools, such as MBTI, Hogan, ESCI, KF 360, and DiSC.
